About Barnes
Barnes is a small leafy enclave in the loop of the River Thames running from Hammersmith Bridge up to Chiswick Bridge. Barnes has long been favoured by those looking to live in a green "country-like" location yet within twenty minutes to the City and West End and in the other direction twenty minutes to Heathrow Airport. Many purchasers and tenants are drawn to Barnes because of Schools such as St Pauls School, The Harrodian School and The Swedish School all situated in Lonsdale Road. There is also Ibstock Place School in Roehampton situated on the edge of the majestic Richmond Park providing the local area with exquisite walks, cycling, riding and Golf. Barnes encompasses three distinct areas:
North Barnes
Close to Hammersmith Bridge and very popular with commuters requiring the London Underground to get to work.
This area has become very desirable since the Harrods Depository was sold and developed into Harrods Village, a prestigious riverside gated development providing high quality apartments and houses with the use of a leisure centre with such facilities as an indoor 25 metre swimming pool, jaccuzzi, sauna, steam room and solarium. There is also a conference room with office facilities.
Next to Harrods Village is the idyllic and peaceful Barnes Waterside development with a mixture of grand detached houses, semi detached and townhouses and apartments surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens and pond. Many of the properties have spectacular views over the Wetlands Centre located in Barn Elms and a thriving centre for ornithologists and families alike. Many rare species of birds are being attracted back by this very special habitat.
Barnes Village
Church Road and Barnes High Street which join together at Barnes Pond and Green.
The latest luxury development to take place here is The Sorting Office which has been converted in high specification apartments overlooking the green and the pond. On the ground floor of this building is Ask Pizza and to the rear the OSO which combines a gallery, theatre and cafe. Barnes Mainline station sits in the middle of Barnes Common and in 20 minutes transports you to Waterloo.
A landmark here is The Sun Inn which also overlooks the Pond.
Barnes High Street still retains its unique retail outlets Bob Seal butcher, The Cheese Shop, The Fish Shop and many more interesting shops. Barnes has truly become 'cafe society' with new coffee houses springing up in all sectors. Of the many excellent restaurants that Barnes is noted for Sonny's and Riva are perhaps the most renowned. The Bulls Head famous for its live music particularly jazz sits at the end of Barnes High Street overlooking the River Thames.
Just down the road is the Barnes Sports Club with its sports field and tennis courts. Tennis enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in Barnes with private all weather tennis courts at both Rocks Lane Tennis Centre and The Riverside Club. Municipal Courts can be booked at any time at Barn Elms and for the energetic there is a running track.
Little Chelsea
Made up of charming Victorian cottages is a favourite with young professionals with myriad homely restaurants such as Annies, The Tree House and The Depot and antique shops all within a few minutes walk. Barnes Bridge mainline station is also very close by ( Waterloo 20 minutes). For those commuting by car from Little Chelsea, there is easy access to both the A316/M3 and M4 motorways.
All in all although only 10 minutes drive from Kensington High Street, Barnes epitomises Village family life with a great sense of community.
